AI Search Visibility
What is AI search visibility (and how to check yours)?
Short version: AI search visibility is whether tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, and Google AI mention your brand when someone asks them a buying question. It is not the same as your Google ranking. You can sit at #1 on Google and still get left off the AI's shortlist like the last kid picked in gym class. You can check yours by hand in about 15 minutes, and the rest of this post explains exactly how.
What AI search visibility actually is
AI search visibility is how often, and how favorably, your brand shows up inside the answers AI tools generate. When a buyer types "best project management tool for remote teams" into ChatGPT, the model writes back a short list. Visibility is simply whether you are on that list — and whether the model says something flattering or something from a 2023 Reddit thread.
People measure it three ways: how often you get cited compared to competitors, which of your pages the AI pulls from, and the tone it uses when it mentions you. That is the whole concept. Everything else is commentary (and most of the commentary is trying to sell you a dashboard).
Why it is not the same as your Google ranking
Here is the part that surprises people. Traditional SEO measures where you land in a list of blue links. AI search visibility measures whether you make it into a generated paragraph. Different system, different inputs, different winners.
An AI model answers from what it learned in training plus whatever it pulls in live, weighted by how much it trusts the source. So a competitor with fewer keywords but more mentions across the web can beat you in the AI answer while losing to you on Google. Your page-one ranking is real. It is just starting to feel like the Blockbuster late-return slot of marketing channels: still lit up, fewer and fewer people pulling in.
We wrote more about that split in the free AI visibility mini-audit — it checks the second system, the one your analytics does not show you.
How AI decides who to recommend
No one outside the labs knows the exact recipe, and anyone who quotes you precise percentages is guessing in a confident font. But the broad ingredients are well understood:
- What it learned in training — how often and how clearly your brand was described across the web the model trained on.
- What it can cite live — pages it can pull and quote right now, especially ones that answer the question directly.
- How much it trusts the source — established, consistent, third-party mentions beat one self-congratulatory landing page.
The pattern, in plain terms: the model recommends brands it has heard of, from sources it trusts, in words it can lift cleanly. If it has barely heard of you, you are not in the answer. You have been ghosted by a language model.
How to check yours in 15 minutes (no tool required)
You do not need software to find out where you stand. You need a few prompts and a little honesty. Here is the manual version of what we do:
- Write down 10 questions a real buyer would ask before choosing your category — "best X for Y", "X vs Z", "is X worth it".
- Ask each one in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, and Google AI. Use a fresh chat so old context does not flatter you.
- For every answer, note who got named. Mark whether you appeared, which competitors appeared, and what the model said about each.
- Count it up. Your visibility is the share of those answers you showed up in. Their visibility is the share they showed up in.
- Read the prompts you lost. Those are your repair list, in priority order.
That is the entire method. It is unglamorous and it works, which is roughly the house style around here.
What the tools measure (and when you actually need one)
Plenty of platforms now track this automatically across thousands of prompts, watch it over time, and chart your share of voice against rivals. That is genuinely useful — once you have a reason to watch a trend line.
The honest answer is that most brands do not need one yet. If you have never checked at all, a one-time manual pass tells you the thing that matters: are you in the conversation or not. Buy the monitoring once you have something to monitor. Reputable options for later include trackers built specifically for AI answers, and Google's own Search updates are worth following for how AI Overviews keep shifting.
When this won't matter to you
If you run the prompts and you already show up in every answer you tested, congratulations — you can close this tab and get your afternoon back. AI visibility is a problem worth solving when buyers in your category are clearly researching in AI tools (in recent B2B buyer surveys, more than half now say they often start there) and you are not in the answers. If neither is true, spend the time elsewhere. We would rather tell you that than sell you a fix you do not need.
Straight answers
What is AI search visibility?
AI search visibility is whether tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, and Google AI mention your brand when someone asks them a buyer-intent question, and how favorably they describe you when they do.
How is AI search visibility different from SEO?
SEO measures your position in a list of links. AI search visibility measures whether you appear inside a generated answer. They draw on different signals, so you can rank well on Google and still be absent from AI answers.
How do I check if AI mentions my brand?
Ask 10 buyer-intent questions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, and Google AI in fresh chats, and record whether you and your competitors get named in each answer. Your visibility is the share of answers you appear in.
Why does AI recommend my competitor and not me?
Usually because the model has heard more about them, from sources it trusts, in words it can quote cleanly. It recommends brands it knows from sources it trusts — if it barely knows you, you are not in the answer.
Do I need a paid tool to measure AI visibility?
Not to start. A one-time manual check across the main AI tools tells you whether you are in the conversation. Paid monitoring is worth it once you have a trend worth tracking over time.
